About Sue Wickison
B.A. (Hons), Four-year Degree in Scientific Illustration Middlesex University, London
Scientific Illustrator, Botanical Artist

Sue Wickison was born and raised in Sierra Leone, West Africa, where her passion for natural history was inspired by her father—a teacher, amateur botanist, and artist. Together, they embarked on expeditions to locate, identify, and collect botanical specimens, nurturing her lifelong love for plants and illustration.
Sue’s career has taken her across the globe. She has contributed to illustrated books for the Agricultural and Forestry Departments in the Solomon Islands, Nepal, and Vanuatu. During an expedition to the Solomon Islands to collect orchids for Kew Gardens.
Sue discovered several new orchid species, including Coelogyne susanae, which was named in her honor. Additionally, she has designed over 50 natural history stamps for countries in the Pacific.
Now based in New Zealand, Sue continues working as a freelance botanical artist. Her focus includes the unique native flora of New Zealand as well as plants of global significance. Over recent years, she has been deeply involved in the Plants of the Holy Qur’ān project, traveling extensively in the UAE—from the Empty Quarter to Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and remote farms—to identify and study plants mentioned in the Qur’ān. Her research has also taken her to Oman’s remote mountain regions, where centuries-old agricultural practices persist, and to locations in the UK, Australia, Fiji, and New Zealand to source additional materials.
“After years of researching, sourcing, and illustrating the plants described in the Qur’ān, it’s a joy to celebrate the culmination of this work through this new exhibition. Having worked as a botanical illustrator at Kew Gardens for nearly a decade, I’m thrilled to showcase these new paintings in a setting that is so meaningful to me, alongside my collaboration with Dr. Shahina Ghazanfar on this unique project.”
