Botanical Art Talk with Julia Trickey

PLANTS OF THE QUR'ĀN

Speaker: Sue Wickison
27 APRIL 2023
7pm BST (2pm EDT, 11am PDT)

Over the last 6 years, Sue has travelled to some remote areas such as the Hajar mountains in Oman, to find plants that have been grown in the same way for centuries. This is to ensure accuracy and attention to detail for the illustrations of 'Plants of the Qur’an - History and Culture', written by Dr Shahina Ghazanfar and to be published by Kew Gardens mid 2023.

Be inspired, as Sue shares how she tackled challenges including depicting 2mm leaves, 1mm scales and painting 100s of dates. And see how she corrected mistakes along the way.

Sue trained as a Scientific Illustrator and worked at Kew Gardens over a period of 9 years illustrating Grasses, Legumes and Orchids, one of which was named after Sue following a two year Winston Churchill travelling Fellowship (collecting Orchids for Kew in the Solomon Islands). Sue has exhibited internationally, won awards and has work in the Hunt Institute of Botanical Documentation, the Shirley Sherwood Collection and other international collections.

BOTANICAL ART TALKS at Julia Trickey

Meet artists behind the art, from the UK and beyond, as they talk through their favourite projects or botanical art techniques. These one-hour online talks, started during the Pandemic, aim to connect those inspired by botanical art at every level, whether beginner or professional artist. Presentations are richly illustrated with examples of artwork and/or technique demonstrations, followed by the opportunity for Q&A. Every talk is unique in style, reflecting the personality and interests of each artist.

Whether you attend the event live or not, you will receive a link to the talk recording 24 hours after the live event. (I would rather this was sooner but the timing is controlled by Zoom and this is the earliest they will send out a follow-up email). The link to the talk recording is sent out 24 hours after the live event.
